University and Social and Cultural Change in Algeria

Project type : National Research Programs (PNR)
Theme : The University and Its Stakeholders
Keywords : Cultural change Student youth University
Summary

Following Algeria’s independence, the state set itself the goal of modernising society, with the ultimate aim of creating the “new individual” within a “new society” (national charter). Industrialisation initially appeared to be the most suitable means to achieve this change. Two decades later, signs of industrial recession began to emerge. Industry was no longer capable of achieving the desired cultural transformation.

At present, the tertiary sector seems to take over this role. Due to the democratisation, Algerianisation, and Arabisation of universities, there has been an unprecedented influx of students, bringing together hundreds of thousands, and even millions, of young people seeking knowledge and culture. Beyond the formal training provided, universities tend to become spaces of re-socialisation and acculturation to modernity. This is observable in students’ representations and practices, due to the youth of the social category, the dual social and gender diversity, and the degree of freedom afforded to students.

Objectives:

Identify the conceptual fields covering the Algerian university.

Define the objectives in terms of methods and approaches.

Conduct a comprehensive review of knowledge related to the Algerian university.

Evaluate university education with a view to improving the teaching system.

Measure identity changes among young people and in society at large.

Actions Taken / Planned:

Review and inventory of existing studies on the university.

Analysis of statistical data.

Analysis of internal documentation from the University of Tlemcen.

Development of observation grids and interview guides.

Conduct interviews with students and faculty.

Prepare a mid-term research report.

Quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Writing of the final report.

Organisation of a national scientific event.

Expected Results / Prospects:

Develop a new approach to studying the university, going beyond classical research to highlight the lesser-known aspect of the institution—its role in re-socialising students, preparing them to become social actors (parents, workers, citizens…). The university thereby becomes a space for cultural acculturation and the reformulation of society as a whole.

Contribute to raising awareness among decision-makers regarding the new challenges posed by the university today and in the near future, emphasising the importance of paying full attention to this institution now.
