Translation of Dictionary of the Past of Algeria. From Prehistory to 1962, edited by Hassan Remaoun

The importance of translation lies primarily in the significance of the subject being translated. In this context, our choice to translate this dictionary stems from the considerable scientific and academic value of the material it contains. This dictionary addresses the history of Algeria across various historical periods, spanning from Prehistory to 1962. It is intended for researchers, university students, as well as the general public interested in the subject.

The dictionary was produced within the framework of the Second National Research Project (2011–2013), specifically linked to the research field “Population and Society,” by a research team composed of permanent and associate researchers at the Center for Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology, a project in which we had the honor to participate.

The dictionary consists of 145 articles distributed over more than 600 pages, presenting the most important personalities, places, and events that marked the periods covered (from Prehistory to 1962). Translating this historical reference will make it accessible to Algerian students and researchers in the field, as well as to anyone interested in Algerian history—especially in the context of the Arabization of social sciences and humanities in Algeria, including the discipline of history.

We have also noted the insistence of audiences with diverse backgrounds on the necessity of translating this dictionary into Arabic. This project further aims to address the existing gap in scholarly references written in Arabic, particularly dictionaries and encyclopedias dealing with the history of Algeria.
