Research problem

Parents tend to choose certain first names with religious, historical, revolutionary, or aesthetic connotations. These names and their diverse meanings give this modest research temporal, spatial, psychological, and aesthetic dimensions, imparting a cultural character and providing density and richness, like life itself.

From a psychological perspective, a person’s name is a core component of their identity, perhaps a part of the self. It is important and carries multiple, multidimensional meanings. Variations in space influence these meanings, including religious, historical, revolutionary, national, and aesthetic aspects. In short, names carry a civilizational value, and their connotations reflect both living conditions and the awareness and sensibilities of different social layers.

Key issues regarding names:

The relationship between the signifier (name) and the signified (bearer) is arbitrary; there is no natural link. When a child is born, they are given a specific name, and only later does the connection between name and bearer form.A name is a personal possession closely tied to our psyche, yet often treated like a mere number (e.g., phone number).Individuals may carry multiple names throughout life: an official name and others assigned socially. Some names gain temporary prominence and fade with the fame of their famous bearers, sometimes causing distress to parents.Names can “rebel” against their creators, as in literature (e.g., Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle).Neutral names exist, devoid of connotation, used like numbers (ID cards, exams, phone numbers, etc.).The issue of freedom is central: names may seem freely chosen, but implicit cultural values often guide and constrain the choice.

Two factors govern name selection:

Apparent freedom in choosing the name. The underlying value influencing the choice, which limits freedom within a cultural framework.

The diversity of names reflects societal events and developments, and recent media has intensified this dynamic by introducing new aesthetic and value-laden connotations into first names.
