Research problem

Employment remains a major concern for governments and decision-makers in the country. The unemployment rate has continued to increase due to the inability of new job creations to absorb the additional labour demand (around 300,000 per year).

This study focuses on youth employment and economic activity among both males and females, as well as unemployment. The objective of this survey is to measure employment and unemployment levels and their specific characteristics, to conduct an in-depth analysis of the labour market, and to identify long-term trends in these variables.

This field survey was conducted between July and September 2006 by a team of well-trained young data collectors. Financial support for this local study was provided from the research team’s budget « ».

This social study is part of our team’s research and evaluation programme and mainly aims to:

Collect local data enabling the calculation of employment levels in both the public and private sectors, as well as unemployment levels affecting a large proportion of young people in OranAnalyse the factors determining employment and unemployment levels and trends, understand the causes of unemployment, and identify the reasons pushing young people to work in the informal economy. These indicators will also assist planners in designing economic and social development plans.Measure the impact of the government programme supporting youth employment and the capacity of SMEs to create jobs.Develop CRASC’s capacities and resources to conduct periodic surveys on employment and unemployment
