Dictionary of Algerian Writers

Project type : Institutional Projects (PE)
Theme : Literary and Artistic Languages and Expressions

Research problem

Dictionaries represent an essential form of documentation, preservation, and historical and geographical standardization. Some of them are based on the selection of information and themes related to the biographies of renowned scholars, writers, and creative figures who have made significant contributions to cultural, scientific, and humanistic life.

Authorship in this field requires the ability to collect, organize, and systematize scholarly material according to chronological and statistical criteria, distinguishing between classical and contemporary figures, while also unifying methodological procedures for classification and selection. These requirements often constitute the greatest challenge in the compilation of such reference works.

There is no doubt that Algerian history is rich in literary and intellectual figures who laid the foundations of civilization and thought, and who built for Algeria a prestigious legacy comparable to that of other nations. Algerian literary corpora therefore stand among the most serious scholarly endeavors that require renewed examination, critical presentation, and institutional recognition of their contributors, whether in poetic forms (classical or free verse) or in prose genres such as the novel, short story, theatre, proverbs, and aphorisms.

Within this framework, the present project aims to produce an Algerian Literary Dictionary that documents the imprint of writers in their respective fields of specialization by presenting their biographies and intellectual trajectories with objectivity, rigor, and academic integrity, without favoritism or bias. The sole criterion of distinction is the literary contribution, its scholarly value, creative capacity, and the degree of influence and recognition it has achieved at the literary, media, social, and cultural levels.

Research Problem

What methodology should be adopted in compiling a literary dictionary ?

Which writers should be included in the classification ?

What selection criteria should be applied ?

What are the distinguishing features of their literary productions ?

The main challenges facing this project lie in defining the boundaries and specificities of Algerian writers, as well as in determining appropriate mechanisms for their classification into categories, as is customary in most literary dictionaries. In some cases, the multiplicity of an author’s literary specializations[1] makes it difficult to assign a clear generic affiliation[2], while in others, questions arise regarding geographical[3] origin and spatial belonging.

To address these challenges, the project[4] relies on the expertise of collaborating specialists and scholars, drawing on their critical and literary perspectives, given their prior experience in producing similar works.

The realization of a dictionary dedicated to Algerian writers represents a major scholarly undertaking for researchers in the humanities and social sciences. Such a work would provide the sectors of education, higher learning, and culture with a rigorous, methodologically sound corpus representing both prominent and lesser-known Algerian literary figures, classified according to their historical periods and intellectual contributions.

Criteria for Classifying Writers

The writer to be included in this dictionary must demonstrate a significant[5] literary output that justifies scholarly attention. Classification is based on three categories:

First category : Distinguished writers recognized for excellence and originality in their literary production (poetry collections, essays, narrative works, etc.).Middle category : Writers who have made respectable literary contributions but have not received broad critical or media recognition.Third category : Emerging writers who accompany contemporary literary movements, producing notable works, yet whose recognition and dissemination remain limited.

It is worth noting that several studies and specialized dictionaries on Algerian literature already exist, produced through individual or collective initiatives that are commendable and encouraging. However, these efforts remain insufficient when compared to the available expertise and scholarly potential within the field of Algerian literary studies and criticism.
